Creating a linked server definition for two-tier configurations

If you are installing iMIS Analytics in a two-tier configuration (see Installing Analytics for details), you must create a linked server definition for the iMIS host to enable iMIS Analytics to connect to your iMIS database. This linked server definition must be created on the iMIS Analytics host. There are many ways to specify the login security credentials for the remote server when creating a linked server definition. This procedure describes the least restrictive method for specifying the security credentials for the remote server. You can adapt this procedure as necessary if you need more stringent control over security.

Before you begin

To create a linked server definition for two-tier configurations

  1. On the iMIS Analytics host, choose Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Enterprise Manager.

    The Enterprise Manager window appears.

  2. In the tree pane, browse to (local) > Security > Linked Servers.

The details pane displays the linked servers defined on the local default instance of SQL Server on the iMIS Analytics host.

  3. Right-click the Linked Servers node and choose New Linked Server.

The Linked Server Properties dialog appears.

  4. On the General tab, in the Linked Server field, enter the domain computer name of the iMIS host to which you are creating a linked server definition.
  5. In the Server Type area, select the SQL Server option.
  6. On the Security tab, in the For a login not defined in the list above section, select the Be made using this security context option.
  7. In the Remote login field, enter the system administrator login of the iMIS server host (usually "sa").
  8. In the With password field, enter the system administrator password of the iMIS server host.
  9. Click OK.

The new linked server definition appears under the Linked Servers node in the Enterprise Manager tree pane.

  10. In the tree pane, browse to (local) > Support Services.

The details pane displays the support services for the local default instance of SQL Server on the iMIS Analytics host.

  11. If the Distributed Transaction Coordinator support service is not already started, right-click the Distributed Transaction Coordinator icon and choose Start.

Note: When you are using a linked server definition to enable iMIS Analytics to connect to the iMIS database on the remote iMIS host, the Distributed Transaction Coordinator service must be running on the local default instance of SQL Server on the iMIS Analytics host to enable iMIS Analytics to extract data from the remote iMIS database.
