Following are terms used frequently in the Certification module:
Category
A category is a group of components similar to university courses grouped by department. You can group component requirements into categories so that completion of some or all of the components meets the category requirement. For example, an initial certification may require 18 hours of education, which can be derived from several different categories, such as Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Electives. The individual courses within the categories are the components.
Component
A component is an individual program requirement, such as a course or fee, whose completion is required for certification. Components can be tracked without a program.
Pass
A student "passes" a component when the requirements of that component are met.
Program
A program is the set of requirements an individual must complete to achieve a specific certification. A program also may have multiple parts, such as a set of initial requirements to obtain certification and another set of requirements to maintain the certification. Programs also may indicate specific dates on which certification must be completed.
Initial Program Requirements
Initial requirements are those requirements a student must complete to receive the initial certification. For example, the individual seeking certification may have to fill out an application, submit a fee, complete a certain number of education hours, and pass an exam to receive the initial certification. These requirements may or may not be used in conjunction with a different set of requirements to maintain certification.
Maintenance Program Requirements
Maintenance requirements are those requirements that a student must complete to maintain the certification after earning the initial certification. Typically, maintenance requirements must be completed over a specific period. For example, a student must complete nine hours of continuing education during a two-year period in order to maintain certification.
Grace Period
A grace period is the additional time given to students to complete a set of maintenance requirements. For example, if a student does not complete the maintenance requirements for a designation, the student has an additional six-month grace period to complete the requirements to maintain the designation.
Designation
A designation is an acronym awarded to a student to use with his or her name to indicate that the student has completed a certification program and is therefore certified in a specific area.
Completion
A student "completes" a program when the student has completed all the requirements of that program.
Rollover
When a student completes the initial requirements for a program, the student's record rolls over to the maintenance portion of the program. This can be an automatic process or a manual process, depending upon the rollover option you select.
